Making Career Choices

Amy Altenhaus, PhD

Find a Career You Love

Are you unhappy with your current job?

Does the career path you chose so many years ago just not fulfill you anymore?

Have you found yourself unemployed after many years of working in the same industry, and need to explore new career opportunities?

Are you a new graduate who isn’t sure where to start your job search?

Are you having difficulty choosing the right college or do you and your family disagree on what is the best school for you?

Changing jobs or starting a new career can be overwhelming—but it can also be an exciting, life-changing experience. Whether you’re changing jobs due to a layoff or by your own choice or if you're looking to continue your education, taking that next step into the unknown can be daunting. But it doesn’t have to be!

As a career counselor, I help guide you on the path to finding a career that you love, one that matches your personality, strengths and interests.

Together we will identify skills and interests that can help define the job of your dreams—as well as break down the barriers that may get in the way of a successful job search.

We then create a plan that will help you find a career that is challenging and fulfilling, giving you the opportunity to do the work you love.

Making the best possible career choices

I will help you create a plan to help you juggle the realities of life, come up with a plan to take manageable steps in your job search that will reduce any fear, anxiety or frustration you may have, and help you make college selections based on your career interests, skills and job possibilities.

Exploring issues and answering questions

We’ll explore the questions that come up when making a career choice, such as, What if I don't know what I want to do with my life? How can I make career choices in a world of economic uncertainty? How do I find balance in my career and my personal life? Do I have to go back to school?

Guiding you in making a positive career choice

I use several assessment tools to help guide you in making a positive career choice. Some of these tools include the MBTI (Myers Briggs) Step I, II and III and the Strong Interest Inventory as well as others. We will review the results together to help you understand how to make the best career choice.

Meet Amy Altenhaus

Amy Altenhaus, Ph.D

I am an experienced, eclectic psychologist who has performed a range of psychotherapy and assessment services over the years. I have a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University and work with all ages in life transitions, family and relationships. The focus of my practice is on relationships, parenting, and life transitions.

Recently, I updated my training in career planning and assessment to help individuals at all stages of their career. I am an MBTI Master Practitioner and work with those starting out in their career to experienced career changers wanting to look at other options. We work together to identify career goals and identify what gets in the way of achieving your goals. This is done through interviewing and career assessments to help you take charge of your career.

I view career choice as something that takes place within the context of a person’s life and relationships. I offer help in career exploration for all ages. Career counseling helps you to find the right fit for who you are and what you want to do.

I work with you one on one to achieve your goals. As an experienced psychologist trained in understanding people, I can help you in your career search, especially if you are feeling stuck in achieving your goals.

Call me to set up an appointment or for more information on how I can help you. We can work together to develop a plan to meet your goals based on your skills, interests and life circumstances.

Working Together

The length of time we will work together depends on how much time and energy you have to devote to the process between sessions, your flexibility in being able make a change and how big a step you are taking between your current and new career.

Although it is impossible to predict how many sessions we will need, you should have a clear sense of progress within our first few meetings. If it seems that we are not moving in the right direction, we will reassess before moving forward with further sessions.

We will work together with the goal of finding a career that has meaning, is energizing and doesn't feel like work. A career you look forward to getting up for everyday. I will work with you to identify strengths and skills, and using these as a basis in helping you find a satisfying career. You know what career choices make sense based on your skills, interests and circumstances. I can help you set goals and get you from where you are to where you want to be.

I use several assessment tools to help guide you in making a positive career choice. Some of these tools include the MBTI (Myers Briggs) Step I, II and III and the Strong Interest Inventory as well as others. We will review the results together to help you understand how to make the best career choice. Fees for services depends on the needs of each individual. Some people come in for very specific services, such as taking the MBTI and having it interpreted, and others may need help to identify their skills and interests and what gets in the way of achieving their career goals, as well as needing ongoing support to achieve these goals. This process is very individualized and I am happy to discuss the process and fees further. Please give me a call.
